Discover the foundational skills of woodworking in our “Intro to Woodworking with Machines” course. Over eight weeks, you’ll learn to use essential woodworking machines like the jointer, thicknesser, bandsaw, and table saw, completing four practical projects that showcase your new skills.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

  • Gain proficiency in using jointers, thicknessers, bandsaws, and table saws.
  • Learn to process rough sawn timber into square and flat pieces.
  • Develop skills in cutting curves, details, and mitred joinery.
  • Complete four projects: two cutting boards, a knife block, and a set of saw horses.
  • Build confidence and competence in foundational woodworking techniques.
  • Course Content and Structure
    Our structured curriculum spans eight weeks of evening classes, held every Thursday from 6 PM to 9 PM. Each session combines hands-on practice with expert instruction, ensuring you master each technique before moving on to the next project.

    Week 1-2: Cutting Board Project

    • Introduction to the jointer and thicknesser.
    • Techniques for squaring and flattening timber.
    • Creating a simple cutting board.

    Week 3-4: Advanced Cutting Board Project

    • Introduction to the bandsaw.
    • Cutting curves and details.
    • Enhancing your cutting board with new techniques.

    Week 5-6: Knife Block Project

    • Basic box construction using the table saw.
    • Mitred joinery techniques.
    • Creating a practical and stylish knife block.

    Week 7-8: Saw Horses Project

    • Comprehensive use of all machines learned.
    • Introduction to a joinery system using slip tenons.
    • Building sturdy saw horses for your workshop.

    WHAT TO BRINg

    Your safety is paramount. While we provide personal protective equipment (PPE), students may choose to bring their own face mask, safety glasses or goggles, and earmuffs or earplugs.

    Footwear should be closed-toed. Don’t fret if you don’t have tools; we’ve got you covered.

    Our on-site kitchen is equipped for those who’d like to bring meals, and there are local eateries just a stroll away.

David believes in continuous lifelong learning and has spent many hours with different Master Makers from Australia and around the world. David's preference is to make smaller artifacts out of highly figured Australian timbers, which he mainly directly sources from Tasmania.
